Abstract

Calcinosis cutis is the deposit of calcium salts in the skin. The iatrogenic form is secondary to parenteral treatment with calcium salts. Calcium gluconate is administered intravenously in preterm infants for the treatment of hypocalcemia. When extravasation occurs, it is deposited in the dermis and/or hypodermis and manifests clinically, as nodules or subcutaneous plaques. The diagnosis is made by the history and imaging studies. The treatment is not protocolized.
A 50-day-old infant is presented with a diagnosis of iatrogenic calcinosis cutis on the back of a hand that was treated with 10% topical sodium thiosulfate with a favorable response.
