Abstract

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and highly aggressive cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma, with a rising incidence worldwide. It predominantly affects Caucasian individuals, particularly older males and immunosuppressed patients. Its etiology is linked to mutations induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, as well as infection with an oncogenic virus: the Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV). The typical clinical presentation is a rapidly growing, erythematoviolaceous tumor located in sun-exposed areas; however, other less common presentations have also been reported. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry confirm the diagnosis. Treatment options have expanded in recent decades, significantly improving the prognosis in advanced disease through a combination of surgery, radiation therapy, and systemic immunotherapy.
