Abstract

Epidermoid cysts are encapsulated, benign subepidermal tumors that contain keratin inside, common in daily dermatological practice. Clinically, they are asymptomatic and are most often located on the face, neck, and trunk. They result from the obstruction of the follicular orifice, and rupture, infection, inflammation, and reaction to a foreign body can complicate them.

Ultrasound of the skin and soft tissues evaluates the size and contact with deep planes. It is a useful study, complementary to the histopathological examination.

The treatment of choice is complete excision with the capsule intact to avoid recurrences. The choice of surgical approach technique will depend on the location, size, and number of cysts.
