Abstract

Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (Russian, 1818-1883). Considered one of the most important Russian writers of the 19th century, he had dealings with writers of the stature of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, with whom he had deep ideological differences. The son of a wealthy family, during his youth he studied literature at the universities of Moscow and St. Petersburg, later moving to Berlin to study philosophy. There he returned imbued with the new trends of the Western world, very contrary to the Slavic, conservative and landowner society, especially in terms of dealing with the peasantry.
