Los virus papiloma humano (HPV), cuyo genoma es ADN, infectan piel y mucosas. A diferencia de lo que ocurre con los HPV que infectan las mucosas, los HPV cutáneos son filogenéticamente heterogéneos, distribuyéndose en los diferentes géneros descriptos: α, β, γ, μ y η. Esta particularidad, junto con la presencia de infecciones múltiples, ha dificultado la tipificación viral en el laboratorio de virología. Si bien la relación entre los HPV de alto riesgo oncogénico que infectan mucosas y el cáncer anogenital está bien establecida, la relación entre los HPV y cáncer cutáneo no melanoma (CCNM) es más controvertida; la primera evidencia de asociación entre ciertos genotipos de HPV ( HPV 5 y HPV 8) y el CCNM fue informada en pacientes con epidermodisplasia verruciforme, pero todavía queda mucho por conocer en relación con la epidemiología y biología de los HPV cutáneos y su rol en la carcinogénesis de piel

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPVs) are DNA viruses that infect cutaneous and mucosal epithelia. Contrary to the genital HPV genotypes, HPVs that infect skin are phylogenetically heterogeneous, and are present in all the genera described, i.e. α, β, g, μ and h. This feature, and the presence of multiple infections, has hindered viral typing in the virology lab. Although it is now widely accepted that high-risk HPVs types play a central role in anogenital cancers, the role of HPVs in non melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) remain controversial. Evidence of the association between certain HPV genotypes (HPV 5 and HPV 8) and NMSC was first reported in patients with Epidermodysplasia verruciformis, but much remains to be learned on the epidemiology and biology of cutaneous
HPVs infections and their role in skin carcinogenesis
